True Stories from Lily House

Here are stories from the girls and staff at Lily House...

hayley's story

Haley’s Story

My name is Hayley, I’m 28 years old and I have been residing at the Lily House for the past 4 weeks.

I came to the Lily House because my Ex- Partner kicked me out when I was 7 ½ months pregnant. I had no money what so ever (as I am not entitled to Centre link payments as I am a New Zealand Citizen) and I really had nowhere else to go where I didn’t feel like a burden on anyone. How I come across the Lily House was actually by my Father (who lives in NZ) as he was searching on the Internet trying to find me some housing where my Ex-Partner could not find me. The Lily House offered me, Protection, Trust, Love, Relaxation, Support, Counseling and most importantly, a FAMILY, everything that I had not had for a very long time since most of my family lives in New Zealand.

Since I’ve been at the Lily House, I have become myself again which I haven’t felt like for about 3 years as I have been in and out of a couple relationships where there was no trust, no respect and definitely no Love. I lost a lot of self-confidence and self-respect and really just felt worthless and I didn’t think anyone cared about me. To be completely honest, if it wasn’t for the Lily House showing me Love and generally just making me feel like I was part of a family, I can honestly say that, I don’t think I would be here today to tell my story.

What I have found by being at the Lily House is that there is other girls that have been through either similar circumstances (if not worse) and also domestic violence. We are all there together to support one another, a shoulder to cry on or just a pair of ears for someone to listen too. We also have volunteers who come and stay with us through the week and also volunteers that come and fill our time in with either, Scrap-booking, Pilates and much more.

I, myself, would really like to stay at the Lily House and volunteer when I am back up on my own two feet as it is just such a worthy cause. I cannot express just how much the Lily House has helped me and I hope I can help other girls the way I have been helped.

Paula's story

Paula’s Story

Lily house is place that is set up specifically to support and help young mothers and disadvantaged girls and women to learn how to parent, care for themselves and to be cared for. All of the above mentioned relates to me, to my family, to our story…

Such a cause as Lily House means more to me than words can express and the gratitude I have for being able to stay there and the changes that Lily house has made mine and my children’s lives is immeasurable…

When I arrived at Lily House in Dec 2012 at the age of 30 pregnant with my 5th child that I didn’t think I would be able to keep her. I was a far cry from the woman I am now… At Lily House, I was shown life skills, given the support, love, and care I needed to strengthen my own assets which then, in turn, allowed me to get my 3 eldest daughters reunified back with me after they had all been in foster care for 6 years.  Also, my son Jackson who is now just over 2 is living back at home with me too as of a few weeks ago.

As you can imagine this amount of change happening in such a short period of time comes with its own challenges, and although we all live in our own house now Lily House offers us ongoing emotional support… The work that the volunteers, etc put into Lily House and its residents is incredible, and they don’t even get paid!  It says clearly to me that Lily House is a service offered out of love, concern, and need…

sonya's story

Sonya’s Story

I am a 33-year-old recovering addict.

My story is one of hope, love, and trust.  On September 12 I went into rehab after using drugs for 7 years.  My two children had been out of my care for a little over one year.  I did three months of rehab then transitioned to Lily House.

One week later my 13-year-old daughter was restored to me and joined me.

After a life with no love or trust I now have a job, am about to start university, a happy 13-year-old in my care, who I have an amazing, loving relationship with and one child who I am still working on reuniting with.  Lily House has supported and loved me back to life.  They have also helped me back into my role as a mother and a functioning, successful, member of society.

I now have hope and trust that the future for both myself and my children will be nothing short of amazing, and when it is time to leave Lily House, I will be forever grateful for the opportunity and support they have given our family!
